Gymnastics Foam PitVideo analysis of the Back Flip

When most people think of the Olympics, the first sport that comes to mind is gymnastics. Supremely fit and strong athletes flying through the air, somersaulting and twisting. Sport defies gravity and leaves us all in awe.

The sport of gymnastics led by artistic movements of the body, often in the air, and there are no rackets, bats or balls in question. For this reason, the video analysis of different gymnastics can provide excellent coaching and feedback to the athlete. Gymnastics is all about technique. By applying the correct technique and timing, the athlete to achieve the desired results.

In most cases, there are no outside influences and therefore a good biomechanics will result in good performance. As a young gymnast myself, I watched and analyzed countless hours of my own technique on video. It is very easy to implement. Most of the gymnastics place in a small area, so you should ensure that the device is set up so you can see the full motion in the field of view and the camera is set up at the correct angle to analyze the movement you want to evaluate.

In college, I continued to analyze my own and my teammates gymnastic technique using video. An analysis very common that we did was the Standing Committee of the back flip. Many elements of gymnastics are back flip as a core component. A double back flip is just 2 back flips in a row without touching the ground between the two, a full - full is a double backflip with a twist in each of flips. The list is long, but what is important is that the technique used to throw a back flip is the same technique is used to start many of the other turning and twisting maneuvers. Capture video to analyze your back flip requires some easy setup:

  1. Set your video camera, so that the gymnast is standing on the side of the camera. Most of the analysis of a back flip is done in this side (sagittal) See, eg jumping height and welding and rotation.
  2. Remember to fill in the field of vision. You do not want your camera to be too far if you have lots of empty space around your subject. You can also do not want too close, so that the gymnast jumps out of camera view. A little trick to know is that most devices have a rectangular field of view (they are wider than high). Thus, the camera switches to the side to be closer to the gymnast, but still be able to capture the height of its leaves. If you decide to return your camera to the side, make sure that some video editing software that lets you view the video track top, or it may be difficult to see properly.
  3. Set your gymnast with a background plane (like a white wall) behind them in the image. This will allow you to score a certain height on the wall and thus measure their height.
  4. If you really want to measure joint angles, such as the knee or hip, it is best to mark these points with a bold marker so you can see in the video.

Take a look at some video I found on YouTube. The video will give you some instructions on how to do a good backflip. The camera itself is not installed in the best position to make good measurements of the height of the jump gymnast, rotation or proper take-off technique, but it is still easy to see that he has a good technique .

This gymnast is really good standing back flip. The most important being the launch that will allow the gymnast to make any changes on his back flip from there. There are 3 phases to the back flip off:

  1. The loading phase: In this phase, the gymnast bends his knees and his arms swing back in preparation.
