Sheffield importance as a center of steel manufacturing in the United Kingdom has declined dramatically in the decades preceding the 80s, but the city has been rejuvenated and now stands fourth in the country, with a lively and creative industry affectionately known as "the largest village in the country.

The center is divided into four sections: Cultural Quarter, the business district, business district and the district of Devonshire. Each section of the city offers a different slice of life of the city, and is equipped with shops, cafes? restaurants and bars that fit the unique atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Home to the World University Games in 1991, and officially named the National City of Sport, Sheffield has all the sports facilities one could wish for! And with 150 woodlands, 50 public parks, and minutes away from the Peak District, Sheffield has much to offer for a weekend.

History

A market town has existed in the Sheffield area now since the ninth century. During the seven centuries that followed, the pioneer area developments in the steel industry and Sheffield became known as the center of the United Kingdom of steel production.

The collapse of British manufacturing and mining industries have had a devastating effect on the city, but the region has recovered well and was officially named National City of sport.

Weston Park Museum presents exhibitions and displays document the long and important history Sheffield and is located on the road to Sheffield Children's Hospital. Important historic buildings include the House of Bishops, with many of its original accessories fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and Head of the old queen, a pub of the fifteenth century in the city center.

Galleries

There are two art galleries in downtown Sheffield: Graves Art Gallery and the Millennium Gallery.

The Graves Art Gallery is based within the central library of the 1930s and houses a vast collection of art from the nineteenth and twentieth century through the Great Britain and Europe. Permanent exhibitions of works by Picasso and Pierre Bonnard, and attempt to document the important artistic movements of the period.

The Millennium Galleries is a complex consisting of four separate galleries: the special exhibition gallery, hosts exhibitions, gallery Ironwork, product history of Sheffield steel, the Craft and Design Gallery, home of craft and design works and the Ruskin Gallery, a gift of art from the nineteenth century artist and writer John Ruskin.

Theaters

The Sheffield Theatres Complex is the largest of its kind outside the capital, and consists of three separate rooms: the crucible, the school and the Studio Theatre.

The crucible is the main producer of theater in the complex, and plays host to the annual World Snooker Championships. The room is large and can accommodate a little less than a thousand people, and stages an impressive variety of theater, musicals and amateur dramatics.

The school is the main place to host major productions filmed in Sheffield, and seats over eleven hundred people. Located in a listed building, the theater hosts a range of products, including opera, ballet and dance.

The Studio Theatre is the newest and smallest sites Sheffield Theatres, and tends to step hailed by the critics, the performances in small scale touring companies and local groups.

Restaurants

Sheffield Restaurants are plentiful, and most of these restaurants and cafes? Located in west of the city in the West: and on West Street, and further south on London Road.
