A trampoline is essentially a gymnastic equipment and leisure is a steel frame with a piece of taut, strong fabric stretched over it using coiled springs as anchors. The first modern trampoline was built by Larry Griswold and George Nissen in 1934. They then established the Griswold-Nissen Trampoline & Tumbling Company in 1942 and began making trampolines commercially in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The United States Navy Flight School trampolines used in training its pilots and navigators during World War II by allowing pilots to practice their orientation. Trampolines have also been used in space flight program to help train astronauts in the experience of different body positions during the flight.

Since 2000 trampoline was introduced to the Olympics as a competitive sport of gymnastics. In the context of competitive trampoline user is allowed to bounce higher than ten meters.

Trampolines are of two types, recreational and competitive. Recreational trampolines are generally circular, octagonal or rectangular, and materials such as bed springs and fabric are not as robust as that of competitive trampoline. Senior competitive trampolines are made of steel that can be folded for easy transportation to competition venues.
