Olympic AirBeijing cleans up for Olympics

The eyes of the world are preparing to focus on Beijing, China for the Summer Olympics of 2008. Accordingly, the capital itself is spring cleaning for its visitors. By hosting the 29th Olympiad, is a turning point for the host city as China opens a new era of prosperity. The city has experienced a huge lift and some elements of basic amenities that Westerners take for granted have been implemented.

Air Quality

A major criticism when Beijing was chosen as host city for 2008 was the chronic pollution, it suffers from factories and vehicles. It is a great source of concern for athletes to compete at their best in any optimal coverage of stifling smog. There are plans for outdoor sports requiring great endurance, if the air does not disappear as a precaution for the health of athletes. Listening to concerns, Beijing is taking drastic measures to clean up its act before the athletes descend on the city. Factories as far away as 100 km from the city have closed their doors for the Olympics. In addition, traffic and pollution from 3.3 million vehicles has been reduced by half the drivers are allowed to take their vehicles on alternate days, depending on the last digit of their license plates is even or odd . The movement of vehicles entering Beijing from other cities has also been restricted.

It remains to be seen whether these measures will effectively improve air quality in Beijing. Much also depends on time if the stagnant air will be trapped on the city or if a cold front will push away the polluted gray skies. In any event, Beijing has been all obstacles and make full use of its $ 20 billion budget for anti-pollution fight against the problem.

Clean Toilets

Beijing has also taken huge steps in improving its image of a modern city by cleaning public toilets. Before awarding the Olympic Games in Beijing, the state of public toilets in the city stood a little more dirty squat toilets. But 57 million and $ 5333 toilet later, the modernization program of toilets has been successful in improving the toilets more hygienic standards acceptable.

In the modernization of Beijing to host the Olympics, the city has greatly benefited from its long overdue cleaning. In addition, the city will also inherit the world-class infrastructure and building sports facilities for the enjoyment of its citizens for years to come.
