Owning A Gym

Posted on April 1, 2010.
Owning A GymGet over your fear of the Gym

Intimidated by the gym because of all the strange equipment, machines, silent rules and huge mean-looking guys? You're not alone. There are many other people who avoid the gym on a daily basis simply because they are not comfortable. A major reason is due to bullying. If you already do not feel comfortable with your body how do you feel when you're surrounded by people who work all the time?

What a poor excuse for not exercising. There is no reason for you to avoid getting a good workout because you are embarrassed to go to the gym! Keep in mind that everyone was the same place as you. Nobody is born with a perfect body. People who go to the gym every day had to start somewhere, like you! Here are some tips to help you get over your fear of going to the gym:

  1. If you feel like you're too much on form and are simply too embarrassed to go to the gym at all, do some exercise outside the gym. You do not need a gym to go running or biking! If you're the guy really self-conscious, go running at night. There are fewer people to see you and it is more difficult to see how you look. Make sure you wear something reflective and have a good light. If you want to build muscle, start doing push-ups, squats, sit-ups, dips, cracks, etc. at home every day. Go get some exercise to your DVD library or a movie store for a few good ideas. Once you feel more comfortable with your body image, it will be much easier to get into the gym.
  2. Bring gym in your home. Look on craigslist (or your local listings) for some deals on used exercise equipment. You will be surprised to see some deals you can get a piece of equipment that has been little used. I bought a large weight set for about $ 100 that had everything I needed. It was not perfect, but it lasted four years in court and still works like new! Get your own equipment may even have some advantages over the gym. You avoid travel, parking, membership, etc. You may be more motivated to exercise if you know that your equipment is in the basement rather than across town.
  3. Select a gym that suits you. Choose a gym that is open when you want to go, has the equipment and classes you need and is close enough to your house so that it does not make too much effort. Also, there are probably more types of gyms you think. Most people picture the gym as a place with a lot of weight sets and gym rats, but there are some who are far away. Have you ever heard of the chain called "Curves"? (It is also one of the men called "cuts"). This gym is very different from your conventional gym. There are no mirrors, no big guys bending, and no weight to settle. Just a bunch of stations and a chime every 30-40 seconds to tell you to change the station. These facilities are designed to help the average out-of-shape mother, father, grandmother or return in a healthy exercise routine.
  4. Avoid peak hours. Try to go from time to time ball when nobody else is there. These hours vary from gym to gym, so call a few places and just ask. The conveyor will just assume that you are trying to get better training and tell you when the times are slower. If you do not talk to any new employee or agent of the gym what are sometimes slower in their path. At my gym at school, the morning was the slowest time. If you went past 6PM, you usually had to wait in line. In some other gyms, I've been to, it is a ghost town after 8pm. Get out of the way to avoid rush hours until you become more comfortable. You will find that the gym is much more enjoyable when you're not waiting around the equipment. Although I'm pretty comfortable with the gym, I always avoid peak hours because I just prefer less of a crowd. <.
